iPad Air Review

Posted on 09 December 2013 by yizhan

Also known as Apple iPad 5
LTE carrier support
Available as:
Apple iPad Air Wi-Fi + Cellular with 3G/LTE support
Apple iPad Air Wi-Fi with Wi-Fi only and no GPS support

Numbers are incredibly out dated. Apple’s newest full-sized ipad tablet forgoes them and select for the exquisite ‘Air’. There’s a clear reason for this. Unlike previous designs that were essentially have great  improvements, the iPad Air is a completely redesigned tablet and would prefer to play as to how slim and light it is. Needless to say it uses the exact same amazing 64-bit A7 processor like the iPhone 5S and comes with Apple’s signature Retina display, but it is the redundant on weight and lack thereof that’s the star here.

ipad air

Apple has always had good products, and when they weren’t good, they were still pretty good. The iPad Air is no exception. Overall, it’s a great product that Apple has created. It’s very well balanced in terms of specs. This tablet is the perfect combination of power and design.

ipad air

Exact dimensions are 240 x 169.5 x 7.5mm and the overall appearance and feel of the iPad Air is simply soft slick. Apple has once again surpassed itself in the design and finish section. The edging adds in a lick of class and the decreased in weight and narrowed frame mean it is  actually useable in one hand, and that is something no one else is yet to manage with a 10-inch form factor.

The iPad Air is actually a lot lighter than the iPad 4 before it, in fact it’s lighter than all of this other tablets along with its class at just 469g. That’s a drop of almost 200g, or 29%, regarding the porky iPad 4. That’s a major generational leap.

It’s not just the additional weight that has been decreased. The iPad Air is  much thinner and narrower than the iPad 4, while keeping the same screen size. At just 7.5mm thin it truly shouldn’t feel as solid as it does, simply the Sony Xperia Tablet Z is thinner at this screen size.

One of the great things about the iPad Air is that it has 64-bit computing. This new difference really set the iPad Air apart from other tablets and other iPads. There is a lot of power packed inside the sleek and light body of this iPad and it really shows during use. This iPad will run many applications at once and still perform as fast as if it were only running one. Because of this, its performance is amazing. The battery life is also impressive. On stand-by, it lasts a few days, but watching a movie or browsing the web, it lasts about nine hours.

The lightweight measurements of the iPad Air means we shouldn’t look forward to greatness through the speaker systems, however these are typically incredibly good for a tablet. Sound is actually clean and crisp and doesn’t endure through the tinny treble that affected dialogue on earlier iPads. The speakers also provide a mite more bass, which means that voices are deeper and even more accurately portrayed.

There are only a few ‘bad’ things about the iPad Air. One of them is that the storage is too small. The general iPad Air comes with 16GB of storage, which is too little for most people. If you want to increase the storage, the price starts increasing as well, quite a bit. In addition, the camera is only mediocre in comparison to other Apple products.

All in all, the iPad Air is a really great product from Apple. I recommend it for anyone who needs compatibility, versatility, ingenuity, and power in one package.

Flat Look: Future-Proofing iOS Design

Posted on 27 November 2013 by Ryan Benson

Apple’s iOS 7 has finally washed its hands off the tacky skeuomorphic look and adopted the flat design. It is a giant leap ahead for Apple devices. And we just don’t mean the iPhones and iPads but futuristic devices such as iWatch, iTV, and even iCar. John Ive battled the odds to ensure that Apple’s mobile operating system iOS 7 got the much needed overhaul. But it was not an easy task. After all, Steve Jobs was allegedly a fan of skeuomorphism, as was iOS creator Scott Forstall (said to his protégé). But Jony Ive wasn’t a skeuomorphic fan resulting in what became the much touted skeuomorphic vs flat debate.

ios7With Scott Frostall’s departure, it looked like the pro-flat design team outnumbered the skeuomorphic side. It was about time that the horribly outdated skeuomorphic look resembling real objects, gaudy gradients, and faux textures had to go. Trying to mimic real objects and mislead audience is clearly a thing of past. Instead, iOS 7 sports clean, simple, and two-dimensional interfaces. iOS 7 appreciates the fact that users are interacting with a flat screen and don’t need to be guided to push buttons.

There is no denying that the flat look aligns with Apple’s long-term goals and is not limited to smartphones and tablets. But Apple thinks big and thinks ahead of the curve. Back in June 2013, during the opening keynote of the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple announced iOS in the Car which allows iOS devices to work with manufacturers’ built-in in-car systems. iOS in the Car would allow to make quick calls, listen to music, send messages, and access maps from in-dash screen.

Well, and as it turns out that operating system designed to be flat design is much suitable to running on multiple devices compared to skeuomorphic designed system. While the visual design is almost similar to that of iOS 7 on the iPhone or iPad, its UI is strikingly different with big rectangular buttons. Obviously safety is the driving force. While iOS In The Car uses buttons of different shapes and sizes it is easy to quickly and safely push a button without taking your eyes off the road because all icons are flat.

The message is subtle yet clear. Apple is future-proofing its design with the flat look of its operating system. And iOS 7 is a step in the right direction.

iwatch

Easy to adapt to new devices: iOS 7 icons can be expanded both vertically and horizontally. It is easy to fill the blank space with the colors on the edges, making it very easy for Apple to adapt visual language to new devices. Take for instance the long-rumored HDTV, Apple will not have to create entirely new icons for this new interface. Rather the flat design allows them to expand their existing icons to fit any shape effortlessly. This would have not been possible with the skeumorphic design. Imagine the complexity involved in interpreting complicated patterns, shadows, texture, and gradients for each new device.

Does not distort: Skeuomorphism looks strange and funny on curved displays. On the other hand, flat designs don’t distort. While all displays are flat right now, there is no denying that future display will come in all shapes and sizes. Iwatch is widely speculated to be curved. With flat UI, Apple has already prepared itself for future inventions be it curved or 3-D displays.

Wrapping up: Now that Apple has broken the shackles of skeuomorphism, iOS is clearly preparing to embrace the future. Be it curved display or HDTV, or groundbreaking gadgets, flat makes iOS’s design more adaptive to changes, futuristic, and agile.

Which 2013 smartphone is the best for gaming

Posted on 23 October 2013 by yizhan

Many of us use our smartphones for games. Some prefer the addictive challenge of a puzzler such as Cut the Rope, whereas others opt for the online casino or an arcade type adventure game. This means that one of our prime concerns when buying a smartphone should be: Which phone is best for gaming in 2013?

Android have a host of stylish phones which are great for gaming, as the Google Play store becomes ever more bountiful, but then Windows phones also have a fast developing app market. With all that in mind, it’s still nevertheless the iTunes store and the iPhone that lead the way for many critics and the iPhone5s looks set to reinforce Apple’s position.

When considering gaming abilities we should look at things like storage – 32or 64GB is preferable as games and heavy Operating Systems really fill a phone up – screen size, processing power and RAM. The latest iPhone ticks all of these boxes and the A7/M7 processing combination really makes the phone a mark of things to come.

That’s not to say Android has been left behind and many will still prefer the slightly larger screen of the Samsung Galaxy S4 or the sound capabilities of the HTC One. This new breed of Android phones have huge quad core processors to keep those graphics heavy arcade action games ticking along, and the user interfaces are great for swiping and touching the screen.

Phones like the Sony Xperia Z have really taken the market by storm, offering a 5inch display, Snapdragon processor and 2GB RAM. The Google Nexus 4 represents how much Google’s products are having an impact on the market. It’s fantastic value and has good size 4.7inch screen for decent visibility.

Remember, if you’re a fan of perusing online betting markets or playing online casino games, a larger screen can be just what you need. Anything above 4.5inches is about right.

iPhone 4's antenna issue resolved

Posted on 29 June 2010 by yizhan

The problem with the iPhone4’s antenna, loosing signal while gripping lower portion which we seldom do when we are making a call, has been a problem since the day it was released in the public. almost everybody noticed this problem.  Well Apple responded on this issue  and said.

“Gripping any mobile phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas. This is a fact of life for every wireless phone. If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases.”

I’ve read some articles from other blogs and found out that by just putting a bumper ( new product by apple for the iPhone 4) it will solve the issue of the antenna problem. The bumper is a plastic strips that wraps around the iPhone 4 and comes up with different colors that gives stylish look for your iPhone 4. The bumper cost $29.00 and only pits with the iPhone 4

MC671 MC672_AV1 MC670_AV4 MC597_AV2

As Apple mention, by avoiding to grip the lower left corner of the iPhone 4 or by just putting a protective casing, signal strength will not drop. Well in this case putting a bumper to your iPhone 4 will resolve the issue. hmm… looks like a good investment to me.

Sony Atrac-Table

Posted on 16 May 2010 by yizhan

Looks like Microsoft Surface got a competition. This coming June, Sony is about to release  their latest interactive touch-screen device that was developed by AtracSys and Sony as well, the Atrac-Trable.  Well most of its feature is really much like of the Microsoft Surface but with added ability. I have only seen this tech stuff in the movie like the Minority Report and Iron Man, well  i think this time its for real.

The sony Atrac-Table is a 35inches wide multi touch-screen HD display and controllable by gestures, and equipped with two two built-in Sony ISS XCD-V60 cameras which detects motion and project the 3D object. Same as the Microsoft Surface, it also has the ability to interact what ever digital object placed over it. Much more, Sony claims that it can also determine your gender, your age, and even your emotion.  Imagine a device that can see or determine our emotion,  cool isn’t it?

Price is not available yet, but for this kind of tech stuff that really shows a big change in our technology today I think it would not be far from Microsoft Surface starting price of $12,500 or maybe higher for its additional capabilities. Well lets just wait..

Microsoft Surface

Posted on 02 May 2010 by yizhan

Microsoft Surface, A multi-touch screen device developed by Microsoft, capable of responding to a natural hand gesture and real-world objects. Keyboards and mouse are not needed, you can just grab digital object with your hands and drag it. The Microsoft surface has the ability to identify and interact with an object place on the screen allowing you to transfer information between devices like digital camera and mobile phone.

Video credits from PopularMechanics.com

Microsoft Surface technology uses cameras and images in the  infrared spectrum, making it possible to recognize different  object  that was placed on the screen and then processed by the computer to display the content of digital devices such as camera and mobile phone.  The user can now interact with it just simply by using hand gesture  instead of mouse and keyboard.

Microsoft Surface’s technology started in 2001, when Stivie Batiche of  Microsoft Hardware and Andy Wilson of Microsoft research began exploring the concept of a interactive table.  Their goal is to mix physical and virtual world to provide rich interactive experience.  This idea was then presented by the New Consumer Products Group  to Bill Gates, and then a month after the first fully working prototype was created, based on an IKEA table and sheets of architect vellum as a diffuser. Microsoft Surface begun evolving as more application was created.   In 2007 the team developed and became the Surface Computing group and begun refining the prototype’s functionality and application. They have built more prototype for use by some software developers, hardware developers and researchers.  In 2007 the team shift from prototyping to building the and preparing to sell the first fully functional multi touch-screen multi-user computer and was commercialize in 2008.
